Craig Hella Johnson

Watch Craig's Story

Through all the amazing ebbs and flows of dynamics, the radiant balances, the seamless connection of episodes, the theatrically astute tempo relations, the unified structural arc, the music shone forth with organic naturalness. Nothing sounded fussed over. Everything just sounded right.

I believe that [Johnson] has understood my music in a way that I have never experienced before. He is a great musician who understands everything about the music he conducts.

Craig’s attitude toward creating a community of artists who work together to interpret the score … goes beyond technical mastery into that emotional depth and spiritual life of the music.

Craig Hella Johnson is a composer, arranger, and GRAMMY®-winning conductor whose work is known for emotional depth, stylistic range, and a distinctive sense of musical storytelling. As an arranger, he has developed a signature “collage” approach, weaving together poetry, sacred and secular traditions, and classical, contemporary, traditional, and popular styles.

His concert-length oratorio Considering Matthew Shepard remains one of his most widely recognized works and, in its 10th anniversary year, continues to be performed by choirs across the United States and internationally. An important part of Johnson’s artistry is his work with contemporary composers, shepherding new music from creation to performance and helping audiences connect deeply with the voices of our time, including composers such as Joby Talbot and Mark Buller. For decades, he has also personally shaped Conspirare Christmas into a beloved annual tradition, curating each season’s program with distinctive repertoire, guest artists, and arrangements that audiences return to year after year.

Johnson is the founding artistic director of Conspirare and one of America’s most distinctive voices in choral music. Under his artistic leadership, Conspirare’s recordings have received twelve GRAMMY® nominations and one GRAMMY® Award, reflecting the extraordinary level of artistry he draws from singers and collaborators alike. Celebrated as a guest conductor of choral and orchestral works, he is regularly invited to lead festivals, honor choirs, and special performances across the country. Conspirare has also been invited to appear as one of three headlining ensembles at the 2027 ACDA National Conference.

At Texas State University, Johnson serves as Professor of Practice in the School of Music, where he teaches conducting and mentors the next generation of choral artists. Previously, as Director of Choral Activities at the University of Texas at Austin, he led the graduate program in choral conducting. He remains an active educator, teaching nationally and internationally with students and professionals at universities, festivals, and conferences.

Craig Hella Johnson is proud to call Austin his musical home. In 2008, he was inducted into the Austin Arts Hall of Fame, recognizing his lasting contribution to the city’s cultural life.

A Minnesota native, Johnson studied at St. Olaf College, The Juilliard School, and the University of Illinois, and earned the Doctor of Musical Arts degree in choral conducting from Yale University. He was also the recipient of a National Arts Fellowship through which he studied with Helmuth Rilling at the International Bach Academy in Stuttgart, Germany. His career has been defined by artistic curiosity, emotional depth, and a commitment to creating meaningful connections among singers, listeners, and communities.

Craig Hella Johnson’s published works include original compositions, arrangements, and selections from his choral series at both Hal Leonard and E. C. Schirmer Music Company.
