Pre-Concert Talk Description: Our society has long held this idea that Western art was developed through a universal aesthetic—that great art can be judged and ranked via a set of principles that everyone more or less feels in their souls once they’ve had enough education and exposure to the right kinds of art. That idea has allowed curators and historians to act as gatekeepers for centuries, and—particularly in classical music—has silenced many of the voices of creators who might have had a significant impact on our understanding of beauty and truth. In recent years, innovative programmers have sought to break down the idea of a universal aesthetic, instead considering how a diverse multiplicity of aesthetics might inspire audiences. Does that mean that we need to start listening differently? The short answer is “No,” and the long answer is: “Maybe we should have been listening differently all along.”
