Tonight the four choirs comprising this weekend’s chorus for the Beethoven Missa Solemnis performance finally all come together in Victoria. The majesty of this music is exemplified by these wonderful singers and instrumentalists who are bringing such heart and soul to this passionate work. The chorus will take the stage with a 52-piece orchestra and four incredibly expressive soloists. This weekend, mezzo-soprano Emily Lodine will be performing Beethoven’s Missa Solemnis for the third time. When asked to reflect on this monumental work, she said:
I have been blessed to sing the Missa Solemnis three times and it is never the same. The passion and excitement of Beethoven’s music grabs us at the first note. Even those who have never heard of Beethoven become partners in this dance. Through the conductor, the orchestra, and chorus, the audience and Beethoven become gifts to each other and to me — such joy!
I hope you will come share in the joy that is the Missa Solemnis at Victoria’s Fine Arts Center on Friday or in Austin at the Long Center on Sunday. It is a piece that still resonates after all of these years, and in the coming days my musician colleagues and I will be sharing more with you.
