“Someday all your pain, worry and sorrow will confess they were a great lie.”
I first read these words in 1998 in a book of Hafiz poetry gifted to me by a new boss. I was 24 years old and had just moved to San Francisco – a land far different from the Kansas I knew as home.
Like many gay men looking for a way to feel comfortable in the world, I’d had a rather large dose of pain, worry and sorrow, but landing in California was the start of something wonderful. I renounced noxious doctrines and started a journey inward to find the boisterous fellow I knew was in there somewhere. And I had Hafiz and a handful of guides to light the way.
I’m 40 years old this year, and I still hold tight to that book of poems and wisdom my boss gave to me. He is an ever-cherished guide and friend asserting what the world needs to hear in the most beautiful language I know: hearts + voices united in song. His name is Craig Hella Johnson, and I am counting the days until we’ll be weaving our voices together this Christmas with Conspirare.
Matt Alber sings “Something Beautiful” with Conspirare from Something Beautiful Conspirare Christmas 2011 with special guests Matt Alber and Mela Dailey.
