Violinist Zachariah Matteson is founding member of Invoke, an Austin based genre-bending string quartet focusing on music written by the quartet and commissions from some of the most exciting young composers in the U.S. Since 2023, he has been a member of the 1st Violin Section of the Austin Symphony. As a freelance musician, he has performed on stage with Estelle, The Eagles, and Sigur Ros and recorded albums and film scores for Graham Reynolds, Carl Thiel, and more. In 2025, Zachariah began a project centered around music for the 5-string violin commissioning composers Sophie Mathieu, Christopher Whitley, and Ignacio Rosado to expand the repertoire for the non-standard instrument. In addition, Zachariah is a poet focusing on haiku and the collaborative poetry form, renga. His poems have been featured in One Art Poetry’s 2025 Haiku anthology, the Texas Poetry Calendar, and Failed Haiku journal. In 2024, his poem “Watermelon” was commissioned as a libretto by Panoramic Voices for a world premier by Sophie Mathieu. Zach is from Kalispell, MT and received his BM and MM from the University of Maryland and has an Artists Diploma from University of Texas at Austin. He studied with David Salness, Kim Fisher, Irina Muresanu, and William Fedkenheuer and coached with the Miro, Guarneri, St. Lawrence, and Enso Quartets.
