It is with great pride and deep respect that I nominate Emily Lodine Overgaard for induction into the Rock County Hall of Fame. Emily’s life and career represent an extraordinary combination of world-class artistic achievement, devoted community service, and a lasting commitment to enriching the cultural life of southwest Minnesota. While her voice was heard in some of the most prestigious concert halls in the world, she remained deeply rooted in Rock County, generously sharing her talent, leadership, and passion for the arts with the community she called home.
Emily Lodine was an internationally respected mezzo-soprano whose career brought her to concert halls and stages across the United States and abroad. A graduate of Indiana University, where she earned a Bachelor of Music degree in music theory magna cum laude, Emily built a distinguished reputation performing with numerous symphony orchestras throughout the country and appearing in major concert venues. Among her many accomplishments was her debut at Carnegie Hall in Handel’s Messiah, a milestone that reflects the high regard in which she was held as a vocal artist.
Emily was also a long-time member of the professional vocal ensemble Conspirare. During her tenure with the ensemble, the group earned multiple Grammy nominations and ultimately won a Grammy Award for Best Choral Performance for the recording The Sacred Spirit of Russia. Her artistry contributed to recordings that appeared on the Billboard Classical Chart and performances that reached audiences across the country and internationally.
Despite her national and international career, Emily remained deeply connected to southwest Minnesota and Rock County. After meeting her husband, Magnolia farmer Gary Overgaard, she made her home on a farm near Magnolia, blending rural life with an active performing schedule. From this home base, she traveled widely to perform while continuing to enrich the cultural life of her local community.
Emily was a passionate supporter of the arts in Rock County. She served as a board member of the Council for Arts and Humanities in Rock County and helped support local arts initiatives, including recording a CD whose proceeds benefited the organization. She frequently performed in community events and fundraisers, including a sold-out performance of Lee Hoiby’s operetta Bon Appetit at the Historic Palace Theatre in Luverne, which raised funds for Blue Mound Area Theatre and helped sustain performing arts opportunities in the region. She also participated in events benefiting organizations such as the Children’s Miracle Network.
In addition to performing, Emily was dedicated to educating and mentoring young musicians. She served as an adjunct voice instructor at several institutions, including Augustana University in Sioux Falls, Northwestern College in Orange City, and Southwest Minnesota State University in Marshall. She also taught voice at Luverne Street Music. Through her teaching, she inspired countless students and shared her professional experience with the next generation of artists.
Emily also contributed significantly to the spiritual and community life of the region. A devoted member of Holy Trinity Episcopal Church in Luverne, she served the congregation in leadership roles and eventually became an ordained rural Episcopal deacon. She regularly shared her musical gifts in churches throughout Minnesota and supported community outreach efforts through music and service.
Her artistic excellence was formally recognized in 2014 when she received the Prairie Star Award from the Southwest Minnesota Arts Council, an honor given to artists whose body of work has made a significant contribution to the arts over an extended period and exemplifies the highest quality of artistic achievement in the region.

Emily Lodine’s life demonstrates how extraordinary talent can be paired with humility, generosity, and dedication to community. She achieved recognition on national and international stages, yet continually returned to Rock County to perform, teach, mentor, and support local arts organizations. Through her music, leadership, and service, she strengthened the cultural and spiritual fabric of this region.
For these reasons, it would be both fitting and meaningful for Rock County to recognize Emily Lodine’s lasting contributions by inducting her into the Rock County Hall of Fame. Her remarkable career, combined with her unwavering commitment to the people and institutions of this community, has left a legacy that continues to inspire musicians, students, and residents alike.
